AstraZeneca has announced that it will pay US $2.5 billion to resolve the controversy over its controversial drug Crestor, which it has called a “fraudulent” drug. The transaction is expected to close on June 28, 2016.
The pharmaceutical giant is also to divest its rights to Crestor, the world’s leading treatment for high cholesterol and hypertension, in the US.
The company is also to pay $1.3 billion to resolve a similar dispute over the drug’s use in treating high blood pressure, cholesterol, and other rare heart disease.
“This transaction is a landmark development,” said Sanofi S. A.’s Sanofi-Aventis research and development director, Paul J. Coates.
“This landmark development gives AstraZeneca a competitive advantage in the pharmaceutical industry.”
The $2.5 billion transaction was announced by AstraZeneca’s chairman and chief executive, Martin Amis, in a statement announcing the deal, which was made public in November 2011.
“This landmark development is the first in a series of transactions in the world’s leading drug discovery research,” Amis said. “This acquisition is a landmark development that marks an important step forward in AstraZeneca’s pursuit to develop and commercialize a new therapeutic for cholesterol and hypertension.”
AstraZeneca is the world’s second-largest drug company with a market share of around 46% at 52,200 shares, up 16% from the previous close.
